If you are interested in under sink water filters, you are already savvy to the hazards of tap water. Home water filter systems have become increasingly popular, especially with people who are health conscious. You can have safe, chemical free water for drinking and cooking for less than 10 cents a gallon. Since I am a health researcher, bottled water is not even a consideration for my family, due to its lack of regulation. FDA regulations only apply if bottled water is transported across a state line. That’s why most water is sold in the state where it is bottled–to avoid regulation. In the minority of cases where bottled water is subject to FDA rules, it is only required to be as good as tap water–not better! Under sink water filtration produces safer water, is more economical, and more convenient.

How to Choose the Best Under Counter Water Filter

To determine the best sink water filters, you must first examine water purification technologies. My article on the Best Water Filters is a water filter comparison of reverse osmosis water systems, home water distillers, pitcher water filters, and carbon water filters.

After you choose your home water filter system technology, the next step is to conduct a product performance comparison. Review each product’s Performance Data Sheet to see the contaminants it is certified to remove and the degree of contaminant removal. This information will be available on a manufacturer’s website (unless the company feels this kind of transparency would be to their detriment). Some manufacturers who do not make this information easily available do not want you to compare their product with other legitimate products.

In summary, compare the products’ contaminant reduction capabilities (Performance Data Sheets), the purchase cost of the under sink water filters, and the products’ ongoing cost per gallon of water produced.

After conducting extensive research on tap water filters, I decided carbon water filters provide the best house water filtration. I chose a multi-media carbon block filter with activated carbon for my house. Because I am educated on the dangers of showering in tap water (not just ingesting it), I purchased a whole house water filtration system to protect my family. Now, every water faucet in my house has filtered water.

However, I realize these are tough economic times; the best choice for some families will be a faucet water filter. The initial cost is a fraction that of whole house water filtration. The complete Premium Under Counter System has an exclusive dual filter system that uses a combination of carbon filtration, ion exchange, and sub-micron filtration. The system has easy to follow instructions and installs in minutes.

Water filters, like filters for your central heating and air conditioning system, must be replaced at the appropriate time in order to ensure continued production of safe water. Without a reminder, it is easy to slip our minds. My home water filtration system of choice has a program which ships replacement filters to your door every 6 months, along with easy to follow replacement instructions. The auto-ship program has free shipping, plus you receive the cartridges at a discount. You save money and eliminate the inconvenience of reordering (not to mention remembering to reorder).

I highly recommend the #1 rated water filter in America. It was also voted "Best Buy" by Consumers Digest 6 years in a row (2003-2008). The manufacturer of this faucet water filter also has 10 years of award winning customer service.

Did you know that tap water contains about the same amount of chlorine (1 to 1.5 ppm) as that recommended for swimming pools? A typical shower can expose you to nearly 10 times more chlorine than drinking unfiltered tap water all day long. Without a chlorine shower filter, the water and steam from your shower has the potential to adversely affect your health for the long term. More than double the levels of chlorine and other synthetic chemicals (VOCs and SOCs) enter your body via skin absorption and inhalation while showering as compared to water drinking.

You came to my website because you are savvy to the dangers of tap water contamination. Most likely, you already have a drinking water purifier. At first, we health researchers thought the primary danger of tap water was ingestion. However, current studies are showing that skin absorption of contaminants in tap water has been underestimated. A warm shower opens skin pores, which allows a high rate of absorption of chlorine and other chemicals. Ingestion may not contribute the sole or even primary means of chlorine exposure. The American Journal of Public Health has linked chlorine to "significant increases in certain types of cancer, asthma, and skin irritations . . ." and has further stated that "up to two-thirds (2/3) of the harmful exposure was due to skin absorption and inhalation of chlorine in shower water". Are we allergic to chlorine?

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated, "Due to chlorine and showering, virtually every home in America has a detectable level of chloroform gas in the air." When we take a hot shower, toxic chemicals are liberated from the water; the known carcinogens chloroform and trichloroethylene (TCE) are released as gasses that can harm us. Chloroform is a strong respiratory irritant which causes fatigue.

Without a shower chlorine filter, the shower steam we inhale can contain up to 20 times the concentration of chlorine and other synthetic chemicals as tap water. These chemicals vaporize at a much lower temperature and at a much faster rate than water. Inhaled chemicals enter directly into our bloodstream, which magnifies the effects. The inhalation of chlorine and chemical vapors is a suspected cause of asthma and bronchitis.

The U.S. Council of Environmental Quality reports that cancer risks for people who drink chlorinated water are 93% higher than for people who don’t. The Journal of Environmental Health published a study of 400,000 infants which showed the relationship between chlorine and birth defects. Pregnant women, who drank tap water OR took showers in tap water, doubled the risk of cleft palate, serious brain defects, and heart abnormalities in their unborn babies.

A shower filter chlorine device provides both health benefits and cosmetic benefits. Almost all of us have swum in chlorinated pools. Do you remember how dry our skin and hair was afterward? Chlorine strips our skin and hair of protective oils, which causes excess aging due to drying. The use of a shower water filter causes our skin and hair to retain moisture more effectively. For those who use highlights and hair coloring, water devoid of chemicals increases color longevity. Overall, we look younger and healthier when we are not subject to harmful chlorine properties.

You are aware that chlorine is in our tap water to kill bacteria, but it should be removed prior to use. I have a whole house water filtration system which removes chlorine, plus many other harmful contaminants, from every water source in my house. If you have a drinking water purifier, but do not have a chlorine shower filter, please stop gambling with your and other family members’ health. Benefit from my health research and bring your family’s protection up to date with the best shower water purifier.

Without a home water purification device, you and your loved ones are drinking unsafe tap water. How can I make such a bold statement? In the course of my career as a health researcher, I examined tap water quality, along with the health effects of drinking tap water. I was stunned when I learned the contamination level of the water we drink and use for cooking every day.

Tap water contains all the chemicals we use in our society–in the home, in agriculture, and in industry. Consider our use of cleaning products, lawn chemicals, gasoline, dry-cleaning solvents, pesticides, herbicides, chlorine, and that is just the beginning! We use over 80,000 synthetic chemicals for convenience purposes and to increase productivity. Did you know that municipal water treatment is not effective at removing synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs)? Traces of low level SOCs are found in almost every public water supply anywhere in the world.

You and I must ask what price is being paid for consuming tap water minus an under counter water filter. Dramatic increases in degenerative diseases have plagued our society in modern times. Many illnesses that could not be linked to a probable cause have now been linked to toxins in our drinking water. Synthetic organic chemicals are carcinogens and are believed to be responsible for the majority of human cancers in the United States. Our drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer. In the early 1900s, before the prevalence of the thousands of chemicals we are exposed to every day, the average American had a 1 in 50 chance of getting cancer. Today, 1 out of every 3 people will get cancer.

A whole house water filtration system is mandatory for removal of lead, the number one environmental health threat to our children. Most municipal water flows through lead pipes over 100 years old, and houses built before 1960 may have water supplied through lead pipes. Water can also contain lead naturally. Each year, lead in drinking water contributes to 480,000 cases of learning disabilities in children. Lead ingestion by children can also cause brain damage, stunted growth, and hyperactivity.

We must also consider tap water’s effect on pregnant women and unborn fetuses. A 2001-2003 study of almost 400,000 infants by Birmingham University, U.K., revealed that pregnant women who drink tap water or even shower in it, may double the risk of serious brain and heart abnormalities in their unborn children. The study established a clear link between chemicals formed during chlorination of water and birth defects. The problem chemicals known as trihalomethanes (THMs) can be contained in drinking water, showers, swimming pools, and even the steam from a boiling kettle.

The use of a tap water purifier which removes contaminants and micro organisms is the only way to ensure we won’t hurt our health. I used to think bottled water could be substituted for an in-house water purification device, but it may be even less clean and safe. Public water systems are required to test for chemical water contaminants four times as often as bottled water companies. Also, municipal water systems must test for harmful microbiological content in water several times a day, but bottled water companies are only required to test for these microbes once a week. Bottled water is not a viable alternative to tap water. The only way to assure water cleanliness and safety is to install a home water filter system.

Since you’re searching for a whole house water filtration system, you are educated to the dangers of drinking and showering in tap water. Many people only use a drinking water purifier. While that is an improvement over tap water alone, it does not come close to providing the safety of whole house water purification.  For many years, we health researchers thought chemicals in tap water posed a danger only when ingested. But, current studies are showing that drinking tap water is not the only risk, and likely not the most severe one.

A typical shower exposes you to almost 10 times more chlorine than drinking unfiltered tap water all day long. Your skin absorbs harmful synthetic chemicals; plus, when you take a hot shower, toxic chemicals are released from the water as gases. Research shows the dangers of vaporized chlorine are 100 times greater with inhalation and bathing than with drinking. Inhaled chemicals go directly into the bloodstream, magnifying adverse results. Chemicals in shower water and in the steam from a shower include chlorine, chloroform, trichloroethylene (TCE), and hydrogen sulfide–all may cause cancer, respiratory illness (asthma and bronchitis), kidney disease, liver disease, and a host of other health problems.

The use of a chlorine shower filter benefits skin and hair. You know how a chlorinated pool dries out skin and hair. What amazed me is there is more chlorine in tap water than in a swimming pool! Chlorine strips natural protective oils, causing excess drying and aging. Without the negative effects of chlorine and other chemicals, skin and hair retain moisture more effectively so you look and feel younger and healthier. Water sans chemicals also extends the life of hair colorings and highlights.

Reasons to Use a Whole House Water Filtration System

  • A drinking water purifier provides no protection for other water sources in the house.

  • Chemicals in the form of toxic gases are released into the air by the dishwasher, shower, and toilet.

  • The use of a shower chlorine filter helps, but is not completely effective at removing dangerous contaminants, because water is filtered at high temperatures.

  • The release of toxic gases into the air causes poor air quality. The American Journal of Public Health links chlorine to "significant increases in certain types of cancer, asthma, and skin irritations."

  • Clothing washed in tap water, which contains chlorine and other synthetic chemicals, can cause skin rashes and other irritations.

Benefits of Whole House Water Filtration Systems

  • Every water source in the house has clean and safe filtered water.

  • Chlorine is removed from water used in dishwashing, which prevents chlorine vapors from being released into the air.

  • A whole house water purifier is the only truly effective shower filter. Filtering water at low temperatures facilitates the removal of chemicals in the water and gases in the steam.

  • Air quality is improved because toxic chemicals and the gases they produce are no longer released into the air.

  • The occurrence of skin rashes and irritations, caused from washing clothing in chemical laden tap water, is eliminated.

Nothing is more important to me than my family’s health. After much analysis, I decided the best water filter was the one voted "Best Buy" by Consumer’s Digest 6 years in a row (2003 to 2008). This water purification device filters out chlorine, lead, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and cysts while leaving important natural trace minerals. We have the best tasting water (like natural spring) from the tap for less than 10 cents a gallon.
